What We Believe

St. Luke is a confessional Lutheran Church. This means that we hold all of the canonical books of the Old Testament and the New Testament (the Bible) to be the inspired Word of God which contains no errors. This also means that we subscribe to the Lutheran Confessions (the Book of Concord published in 1580) and all the documents they contain as an accurate and clear explanation of the doctrine contained in the Bible.

Because the Word of God and the Lutheran Confessions teach these doctrines, therefore, we believe the following to be true:

  • There is only one God, but that God is three co-equal yet distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
  • Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is fully God and fully man and was crucified, died, and was buried before rising on the third day and ascending into heaven
  • Since the fall into sin (Genesis 3) all human beings aside from Jesus are born without the ability to fear and love God as they should and have sinful desires
  • All the sins of every human being who ever lived were atoned for through the death and resurrection of Jesus
  • Full forgiveness of sins and eternal life is received freely by human beings through faith in Jesus Christ
  • Commanded by Jesus (Matthew 28), the sacrament of Baptism is a means of grace whereby God washes away the sins of a human being and makes them a child of God
  • All human beings, regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, or any other characteristic may be baptised
  • In the Sacrament of Holy Communion, Jesus gives His true body and true blood to everyone who eats and drinks the bread and the wine just as He said on the night when he was betrayed (Matthew 26)
  • Christians do good works for the sake of their neighbour, not in order to please God
  • Jesus Christ, the Son of God, will come again in glory on the Last Day, raise the bodies of all who have died to new life, and judge both the living and the dead
  • All Christians will be gathered, body and soul, into a new life where heaven and earth are joined together as they were in the beginning and will dwell with Christ in glory for all eternity
