Understanding Christianity

What is different about Christianity?

Christianity is different than all of the other religions in the world. Christians believe, teach, and confess that our spiritual healing (forgiveness) is a free gift that Jesus, God's Son, won for us by His life, death, and resurrection. That is the beauty of the Christian faith - it is based on what God has done for us, not on something that we must do for God.

What is different about the Lutheran Church?

We in the Lutheran Church take a straight forward approach to God's Word. We believe that what the Bible says about God and our relationship with Him is true. We strive to communicate the truths that God reveals about Himself in the Bible. We rejoice that this is not a unique stance among Christian people around the world, so we continually share our faith and belief with both unbelievers and believers.

One of the hallmarks of Lutheranism is our understanding of the two great doctrines in the Bible, the Law and the Gospel. The Law is God's commands regarding our human life. It instructs us as to how we are to live, but can never save us. Instead, it always shows us our true condition as fallen people. The Gospel, on the other hand, is literally "Good News." It brings us God's grace which saves us from sin. The Gospel is the message that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died and rose again to save sinful people like us and that everyone who trusts in Christ is saved from eternal death. Keeping these two doctrines straight in our teaching has always been important to Lutheran Christians.
